"Toby, Chloe & Izzy B" Intricate Portrait complete!

I just couldn't put my pens down, here it is. I wanted to show you the before and after.
When I look at a photo, I look at the shadows. Instead of trying to draw the faces I focus more on the shadows so each shadow can be blocked of as if it were a mosaic. I mark a light X in the ares that are black because the black areas are important as they give the images their shape. Once I draw out the image I look and my new handy dandy book of patterns (that I will continue to add to THANKS to Eden for inspiring me!!) and decide on 3 or 4 different patterns to use throughout the portrait. This way I find the portrait flows better and is more visually pleasing. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE detail and busy, intricate designs so this allows me to do that without overwhelming the piece. When I choose the patterns I want to use I put them in order from dark to light and then begin filling in the shadows accordingly. I've decided I like the way lips look with the stipple effect because the shading on lips really brings the portrait to life. The eyes as well only I like to use my flowers usually around the pupil. The last thing I like to do is take a pencil and do some light shading withing some of the patterns. I find that this adds contour where it's needed.

There you have it "My Personal Process" of creating these portraits. I'm trying to think of a name for the kind of portraits I'm doing. I would love to market myself as a custom portrait designer and I need a really cool catchy name. I'm a starving artist and I really want to jump start this. Any suggestions on a name for this type of portrait?

  1. Oh Rebecca these turned out so wonderfully!!! I was sitting with Amira last night and watching her do her homework and did a little zenportrait of her, just posted it and of course credited you for the inspiration. But yours here are just incredible. What about calling them 'Zen~portraits'? Just too much fun watching your art as it keep evolving by leaps and bounds!

  2. This is great! Having flowers as part of the photo, it is indeed abstract art, I was not supposed to notice it until you mentioned it. These are great valentines day gifts too.

  5. I like that-- Zen-portraits--because they are very Zen. They are just amazing--I hope you take this example with you when you go to your art show--these would be perfect Christmas gifts, because for one thing--they're very very unique, and that's what people are looking for at Christmas time.

These are little Valentines Mice made out of little white stones. I stuck felt hearts on them and then embelished them with bows and eyes. This is a fun Valentines Day craft for my daughter's second grade class!

India

Meet India, she is such a treasure! I made from a tea cup I brought back from India last year. She sits 6 1/2 inches tall. The base she sits on is a beautiful square plate I found in Crate & Barrel that matched the tea cup perfectly. India has been embellished with fabrics I also brought back with me. Her hair is a combination of wool and acrylic fibers and she is jeweled with brass accents. India has henna patterns on the souls of her feet and around the tops of her arms and sits in this peaceful position as she meditates. She's waiting to sit in your home and bring you peace.

Meet Mable, she's trying her best to keep her skin glowing. She believes in nourishing her body from the inside out but once a week a good facial mask and cucumbers on her eyes make all the difference in the world. She stand 8 inches tall and would love to sit on the side of your tub or on your dresser. She could spend hours in the bathroom! * Mable is an original one of a kind decorative Art Doll and not meant to be played with as a toy.
