"Surprise Guest" (a painting of mine from 2009)

This is another painting of mine from 2009. It sometimes takes people a while to see whats actually in this painting. There is a midnight blue cat in the window that can only been seen from certain angles. This piece is huge, it measures 5 feet X 4 feet and a few of my friends saw it three times before they even noticed the huge purple giraffe (The "Surprise Guest") slurping up a piece of spaghetti off the plate. This was a fun painting to create. It took me about 6 weeks to complete and that was working on it 6 to 8 hours a day. I really wanted the mosaic dotted effect on the people to contrast with the rustic wall in the backdrop. If you look closely you will see the "Mona Lisa" hanging on the wall. That is actually "My Mona Lisa" that I decoupaged onto the canvas. I will post photos of "My Mona Lisa" tomorrow. She isn't just a Mona Lisa, as you will see in tomorrows post. Stay tuned.....

  1. I looked at this painting a long time, thre is a lot to see which is what I like a lot. It gave me memories of gatherings of family or friends, especially gatherings where there is something not quite right, the faces show some are aware of a problem, some seem to not notice and some seem in denial. I also thought of a very old song called "The Band Played On" I was thrilled to see the cropped pictures of this so I could study the faces and think about their role in the gathering.

    Enjoyment for me this morning

India

Meet India, she is such a treasure! I made from a tea cup I brought back from India last year. She sits 6 1/2 inches tall. The base she sits on is a beautiful square plate I found in Crate & Barrel that matched the tea cup perfectly. India has been embellished with fabrics I also brought back with me. Her hair is a combination of wool and acrylic fibers and she is jeweled with brass accents. India has henna patterns on the souls of her feet and around the tops of her arms and sits in this peaceful position as she meditates. She's waiting to sit in your home and bring you peace.
