Frida & First Day of School

Wow, is it quiet around here!! I've been up since 5:15 making lunches, toasting bagels and braiding hair. I cannot believe my girls are off to school!! We live in GA but I am originally from Boston and we never used to go back to school until after Labor Day. This always seems so soon but they have been out since the end of May and were ready to go back! They were so excited this morning and popped right out of bed. I remember that feeling, it's always nice to start a fresh year of school with new shoes and school supplies. We had a wonderful summer but now it's time to get back into a routine again.
On another note I finished my Frida Sketch. This was a fun piece to work on and while I was doing it I realized what my new project is going to be. A few weeks ago I ordered an enormous Moleskin 12" X 16" that arrived over the weekend. These pages are huge... especially if I use both pages in a two page spread that would make it 24" X 32". It's incredible! It will definitely take me longer to do each page now that I will be working on a bigger scale.
What I'm planning to do is to transform some of the Master's famous Paintings or even photographic portraits of them and turning them into new pieces of art using my daisydolls technique of creating shadows with patterns. I plan to do this by combining collage and hand drawn patterns. After doing this quick sketch/doodle of Frida it's really made me want to dive in and do my first piece in my new HUGE Moleskin Art Journal of one of Frida Kahlo's amazing photographic portraits. Stay tuned, I will photograph as I work and keep the progress reports coming. I'm excited and cannot wait to start!!

  1. Wow! back to school today!! This will be me very very soon...5:10 a.m. Ugh!!! Why does it all have to begin so early in the morning.. in the dark?! Your daughters are beauitful, as are you. I love your Frida and that glance at your whole journal. I can not even imagine the size of your new moleskine! Right now my pages are 7 x 7 1/2 and that's a new size and shape for me, though I love it. Maybe I should try a huge one...let me know how it feels...! Enjoy our loooong, quiet day. ♥Kathy

  13. Frida herself would love this work . I have the book version of her journals and she was a natural at doodling in color and form- freeflow in expression much like you have done here. Your family is beautiful and back to school was always a welcome occasion in our house! Fun post Rebecca.

  19. Hi, Rebecca! So glad to see you back "on your porch" again, ;). Your Frida is wonderful ~~ so much detail. Oh my, the first day of school; I remember those days ~~ the excitement of beginning something new, having new clothes and supplies, and the excitement of discovering whom my teacher(s) would be, as well as what classmates I would have joining me for the year. I hope both of your girls had a fabulous first day, and will have a grand year ahead. Love your pics, ;)! OMGoodness, you got The Big One (moleskine)! Let me know how you like it. I've heard Suzi Blu say that the paper isn't the same as with the 'regular-sized' journal/sketchbook Moleskine ~~ let me know if you find this to be true. Happy creating, sweet lady! You are SUCH an inspiration to me ~~ Jeanne

India

Meet India, she is such a treasure! I made from a tea cup I brought back from India last year. She sits 6 1/2 inches tall. The base she sits on is a beautiful square plate I found in Crate & Barrel that matched the tea cup perfectly. India has been embellished with fabrics I also brought back with me. Her hair is a combination of wool and acrylic fibers and she is jeweled with brass accents. India has henna patterns on the souls of her feet and around the tops of her arms and sits in this peaceful position as she meditates. She's waiting to sit in your home and bring you peace.
