"Practical Journal Pages"

In my Art Journals I always like to squeeze in a page here and there with images I can use to create fun things with. I like to call them my "Practical Journal Pages". Sometimes my journal pages can be turned into prints as well especially when the text is suitable. To make a living as an artist is tricky for me, I have the name starving artist written across my forehead. Not only do I find it extremely difficult to sell my own work, I also have zero business sense. It literally doesn't jive with my brain and it sucks the fun right out of my art. When I am painting, I can work towards an art show or work to have them displayed in a gallery but that usually leads to one style and I like to try new things all the time. When I'm working in my art journal there is no pressure and I can really have fun with it. I am also a very practical person so creating practical items with a unique look to them is kind of what comes naturally for me. I am thankful for my Etsy Shop because it really allows me to make things available without having to do all the dirty work of going in and out of places trying to get them to love my work. Wouldn't it be nice is every artist had a sidekick manager to go out and do all that for them. That would be ideal because all I ever really want to do is create!! Teaching art is also something I really love to do. I get a huge amount of satisfaction out of teaching my students and then seeing what they produce from the techniques I've taught them. This is why Art Journaling is so amazing!!

This is a "Practical Journal Page" I created that I'm using to create some more fun and unique hair brushes. I used one of my funky fonts to do the lettering along the bottom of the page. The second photo shows some hair brushes and a few journal covers that are still in progress. I'm hoping these items will do well at the Art Festival I'm in, in October. I think they make wonderful gifts for people. Does anyone else make practical journal pages?

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

  1. Very good idea Rebecca. You are basically "killing two birds with one stone" by creating your journal pages. They are serving a double duty..maybe even a triple duty since you then go out and teach using your journal techniques. I'd say you have a very good business sense! It is hard for an artist to work from both sides of the brain and be good at art and business. I think you are on the right path with your upcoming online class.

Thanks so much for the post.

    Have a great weekend!

  2. You should have a fabulous fall show with the beautiful pieces you have created. Yes, a magical manager that would be nice.

  4. When I was painting murals, the business side was always difficult for me. I understand EXACTLY what you mean! I used to wish that I had a manager to "sell" my work so that I could just do the creative stuff and paint. Love your pages! Happy Weekend! Hugs, Terri xoxo

  5. I love these brushes! They are too cool! Who would not love to have one of these pieces of art?
I am looking around for a source for the pendant materials to do something like your necklaces here. I think they are fabulous and I would love to wear one of my drawings myself. We have a bead / jewelry shop here in town, so I need to go check it out.

    Just LOVE everything you do!

  6. I just gave another one of your fabulous hairbrushes away for a gift at a lingerie shower the other day. The young girl got some absolutely stunning gifts but a close friend of hers told me that her favorite gift was mine - YOUR HAIRBRUSH. That's what I love about a truly unique gift! thank you so much for making me a hit. I'm out again as I gave another one yesterday. So you will hear from me soon!

  7. Well, if I had a fairy Godmother I would ask her to wave her wand and bring a business manager into your life so all you had to concentrate on was creating more wonderful creations! The business bit is the downside eh?!

  8. I have absolutely NO business sense either. I have found that whenever money is involved it truly does take the fun out of everything for me. So I just do it for fun now. I don't know how I would do if I were to sell any of my art.
I think you will do awesome! You seem to have a great business sense and you have created so many beautiful pieces that I am sure to sell really well!

These are little Valentines Mice made out of little white stones. I stuck felt hearts on them and then embelished them with bows and eyes. This is a fun Valentines Day craft for my daughter's second grade class!

India

Meet India, she is such a treasure! I made from a tea cup I brought back from India last year. She sits 6 1/2 inches tall. The base she sits on is a beautiful square plate I found in Crate & Barrel that matched the tea cup perfectly. India has been embellished with fabrics I also brought back with me. Her hair is a combination of wool and acrylic fibers and she is jeweled with brass accents. India has henna patterns on the souls of her feet and around the tops of her arms and sits in this peaceful position as she meditates. She's waiting to sit in your home and bring you peace.

Art Doll Mable
Meet Mable, she's trying her best to keep her skin glowing. She believes in nourishing her body from the inside out but once a week a good facial mask and cucumbers on her eyes make all the difference in the world. She stand 8 inches tall and would love to sit on the side of your tub or on your dresser. She could spend hours in the bathroom! * Mable is an original one of a kind decorative Art Doll and not meant to be played with as a toy.
