In my Art Journals I always like to squeeze in a page here and there with images I can use to create fun things with. I like to call them my "Practical Journal Pages". Sometimes my journal pages can be turned into prints as well especially when the text is suitable. To make a living as an artist is tricky for me, I have the name starving artist written across my forehead. Not only do I find it extremely difficult to sell my own work, I also have zero business sense. It literally doesn't jive with my brain and it sucks the fun right out of my art. When I am painting, I can work towards an art show or work to have them displayed in a gallery but that usually leads to one style and I like to try new things all the time. When I'm working in my art journal there is no pressure and I can really have fun with it. I am also a very practical person so creating practical items with a unique look to them is kind of what comes naturally for me. I am thankful for my Etsy Shop because it really allows me to make things available without having to do all the dirty work of going in and out of places trying to get them to love my work. Wouldn't it be nice is every artist had a sidekick manager to go out and do all that for them. That would be ideal because all I ever really want to do is create!! Teaching art is also something I really love to do. I get a huge amount of satisfaction out of teaching my students and then seeing what they produce from the techniques I've taught them. This is why Art Journaling is so amazing!!
This is a "Practical Journal Page" I created that I'm using to create some more fun and unique hair brushes. I used one of my funky fonts to do the lettering along the bottom of the page. The second photo shows some hair brushes and a few journal covers that are still in progress. I'm hoping these items will do well at the Art Festival I'm in, in October. I think they make wonderful gifts for people. Does anyone else make practical journal pages?

Very good idea Rebecca. You are basically "killing two birds with one stone" by creating your journal pages. They are serving a double duty..maybe even a triple duty since you then go out and teach using your journal techniques. I'd say you have a very good business sense! It is hard for an artist to work from both sides of the brain and be good at art and business. I think you are on the right path with your upcoming online class.

When I was painting murals, the business side was always difficult for me. I understand EXACTLY what you mean! I used to wish that I had a manager to "sell" my work so that I could just do the creative stuff and paint. Love your pages! Happy Weekend! Hugs, Terri xoxo

ReplyDeleteWell, if I had a fairy Godmother I would ask her to wave her wand and bring a business manager into your life so all you had to concentrate on was creating more wonderful creations! The business bit is the downside eh?!
ReplyDeleteI have absolutely NO business sense either. I have found that whenever money is involved it truly does take the fun out of everything for me. So I just do it for fun now. I don't know how I would do if I were to sell any of my art.
